我们学习语言，不但要学习语言本身，还要学习语言背后的文化。中西方有很多文化背景上的差异，如果对此一无所知，在与外国朋友交往的过程中必然会造成很多误解，闹出很多笑话。让我们来看看以下的情况。

Kim’s Note: In western culture close friends and even family members thank each other for the slightest help or favor.  This is very different from China! A simple task like opening a door or filling out a form is seen as expected behavior among friends.  There is no need to thank!

【Situation境遇】

An Australian man asked his Chinese friend to do him a favor. But he was puzzled by his friend’s response.

一位澳大利亚朋友找中国朋友帮忙，中国朋友的话令他有点摸不着头脑。

Australian:      Will you do me a favor?

                   你能帮我个忙吗？

Chinese:          Is it a question?

                   这还会成问题吗？

Australian: Please help me fill out these forms.  I can’t read the Chinese characters and I am confused! I am sorry to bother you. I’ll appreciate everything you do for me.
请帮我填写这些表格。我不会认中国字，这把我搞糊涂了。要麻烦你真是不好意思。我会感激你为我做的每一件事。

Chinese:           Come on. Are we still close friends?

                   你怎么这么说呢？我们不是好朋友吗？

Between good friends, parents and children, husbands and wives, brothers and sisters, Chinese consider it unnecessary to stick to polite formulas. They seldom make compliments of each other and do not keep thanking each other all the time. They would feel uncomfortable in that way, or awkward doing this. Friends think that the relationship is getting dry, or assume that they have problems in their relationship. In English speaking countries, however, the situation is the opposite. No matter to whom, even for parents to their little child, everyone expresses thanks to those who help and offer assistance. The phenomenon is described as “acting as an example to others” and “equality of human rights”.

中国人认为，在好友之间，父母子女之间，夫妻之间，兄弟姐妹之间，没有必要拘礼客套。他们很少互相夸赞，也不会把道谢挂在嘴边。如果这样做的话，他们会感到很不自在。朋友还会以为双方关系有所淡化，俗话称“见外”；或者揣摸双方关系是否有了裂痕。在英语国家，情况完全不同。不论是谁，即使是家长对幼小的子女，只要他们帮了忙，效了力，都要道谢。他们把这种现象解释为“言传身教”和“人权平等。”

2.                  Preppie    大学预科生
【疯狂讲解】这个词又作“preppy”，也可以作形容词用，意为“未熟的；傻， 笨”。上文中的“prep school”就是“preparatory school”的缩写形式，意指“预备学校”，这种学校一般为私立的寄宿学校，通常都是有钱人家的子女去的地方。学校里的学生就叫做“preppie”。

3.                  Would you…?    你可以……吗？
【疯狂讲解】这也是一个经典句型，用来请求对方做某事。会用这个句型，你就不用天天使用不太礼貌的祈使句。

☆                   Would you please help me with this math problem?
你能帮我做这道数学题吗？

☆                   Would you hold this for a minute?
你能帮我拿一会儿吗？

4.                  be allowed to…   
【疯狂讲解】这个句型，是“allow sb. to do…”的被动语态，表示“被允许做……”。我们再来几个例子：

☆                   You aren’t allowed to smoke here.     你不能在这儿抽烟。

☆                   Students aren’t allowed to stay out after eleven.
学生们不能在外逗留到十一点以后。

5.                  legality        n. 合法性；法律性
【疯狂讲解】这是个“六星级”的名词，是形容词“legal”的名词形式。疯狂英语的爱好者们一定还记得在《发音突破掌上宝》中的那篇“Illegal Drug”，其中的“illegal”也是和这两个词属于同一个家族的。下面再给大家一个例句：

☆                   I question the legality of that contract.
我怀疑那份合同的合法性。

☆                   The legality of this action will be decided by the courts.
这一行动的合法性将由法院裁定。

6.                  ethics     n. 伦理, 道德；道德标准
【疯狂讲解】这是另外一个“六星级”名词，“ethic”也可以单数形式出现，是可数的，但那是指“伦理道德行为”。当它以复数形式出现时，有两种用法，作“伦理学”讲时与单数动词连用；作“道德规范”讲时则一般与复数动词连用。

☆                   Her ethics in business are excellent.
她的商业道德非常好。

☆                   The ethics of his decision are doubtful.
他的这一决定是否合乎道德规范值得怀疑。

7.                  lousy
【疯狂讲解】这是一个美国人非常爱用的“五星级”形容词，它的意思是可以是“bad, inferior, incompetent, unpleasant, contemptible”中的任何一种，可以译作：“坏的；低劣的；不合格的；讨厌的；卑鄙的”等等。除此之外，美国人还可能只是因为情绪不好就到处用这个词，就像电影中的Jennifer一样。下面给大家提供更多的句子，让大家疯狂操练。

☆                   Turn off that lousy music, will you?
关上那烦人的音乐，行不行？

☆                   That lousy doctor you recommended made me worse.
你推荐的那个庸医让我的病更糟糕了。

☆                   The food here is lousy. The service here is lousy. But at least it’s cheap.

8.                  All I want is…    我所要的就是……
【疯狂讲解】这个句型貌似简单，却包含了一个难语法：定语从句（I want），其先行词是“all”，关系代词被省略掉了。在口语中，我们经常用这个句型来表示想要什么。

☆                   All I want is a glass of beer.       我只要一杯啤酒就行了。

☆                   All I want is to be happy.               我所要的就是快乐。

☆                   All I want for my birthday is to see you.    
过生日我要的礼物就是看见你。

9.                  Damn it!    该死！
【疯狂讲解】请注意：这是句骂人的脏话（swear word），用于表达愤怒、惊讶、恼怒或失望，比较粗俗，有点类似中国人常用的“三字经”。所以，这句话学会了也不要到处卖弄，以免引起众怒！
